31 Nations Fall – The Story of the 2022 Dystopian Carnival of Football and Shame, by HS Creative Director Lee Boulton

For the past half a dozen international football tournaments I have undertaken a personal art project in which a piece of each nation’s visual iconography 'falls' as they exit the competition. This flippant bit of fun has taken many forms from screen prints to gifs to cardboard placards.

For the 2022 World Cup I wasn’t planning to bother because, well, Qatar. And FIFA. And human rights. And LGBTQ+ rights. But then I hit on the idea of using AI, that suitably end-of-days medium, to realise a much darker, more apocalyptic creative vision, and ‘31 Nations Fall – The Story of the 2022 Dystopian Carnival of Football and Shame’ was born.
